One of the pioneering Architecture Departments in India, the Department of Architecture, IIT Kharagpur, was conceived for ensuring a holistic integration of the development of science and technology with the normative and cultural dimensions of human society. The first of its kind in the IIT system, the department started its journey in 1952 with the undergraduate course in architecture. In 1959, the first postgraduate course in planning was introduced by the Department, and the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1970. This department is now well recognized for its contribution in both undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, research projects in varied domains and professional involvements in the form of consultancies and sponsored researches. The School of Planning and Architecture had a modest beginning in 1941 as a Department of Architecture of Delhi Polytechnic. It was later affiliated to the University of Delhi and integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning which was established in 1955 by the Government of India to provide facilities for rural, urban and regional planning. On integration, the School was renamed as School of Planning and Architecture in 1959.
Recognizing the specialized nature of the fields in which the School had attained eminence, in 1979, the Government of India, through the then Ministry of Education and Culture, conferred on the School of Planning and Architecture the status of "Deemed to be a University". With this new status, the School had broadened its horizon by introducing new academic and extension programmes and promoting research and consultancy activities. It was recognized as "An Institute of National Importance under an Act of Parliament" in 2015.

The School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University, one of the premier institution of the nation was initially established as a Department of Architecture of the University of Madras in the year 1957 and was located in the Alagappa college of Technology, offering five year Bachelor Degree Course in Architecture with 20 seats intake. The department was later renamed as the The School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University, and shifted to this independent campus of our own in the year 1968. The status of the School was further augmented as one of the constituent college during the formation of the Anna University in 1979. At present, the School has been made one of four constituent autonomous institution of Anna University in 2002, with self-directed purpose to achieve its goal and aspirations to universal standards. The recently the School has formulated Department of Architecture headed by the Dean Prof. P.Swaminathan.
The School lengthened its aspiration to serve the society at large by establishing higher degree courses in Architecture namely M.Arch in 1986 and presently the specialized courses namely - M.Arch(digital), M.Arch(Landscape) as self supporting courses from 2002, with an intake of 20 students, is now expanded to the current intake of 40 from the early 90's. In this academic year the total students on role is 227 with 178 students in the under-graduate programme and 34 students in the M.Arch programmes.

The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to catering to the needs of man-power in technology for the country. The college has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. Because of this rich experience, this institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology. NIT-T was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975.

NIT-T hosts two intercollegiate fests namely Festember (Cultural) and Pragyan (Technical) and an inter-department fest namely NITTfest (Cultural) annually. The Faculty of Architecture started in 1978 with a BArch degree under Mysore University. The institution came under the newly established Mangalore University in 1980 as Department of Architecture.In October 2003, Manipal University renamed the Department of Architecture as Faculty of Architecture.
